Hoy is reached from the Orkney mainland by ferry. The ferry departs the Houton terminal which is a 15 minute drive from Kirkwall. A RO-RO service exists between Houton and Lyness (a former naval base). Booking is essential (for cars) and the telephone number for the Houton terminal is +44 (0) 1856 811397.

From Lyness it is a 20 minute drive along the B9047 to Longhope. The last ferry of the day continues from Lyness to Longhope itself but this service is for foot passengers only (Longhope does not support a RO-RO service). Similarly, the first ferry of the day begins it's journey from Longhope.

All the inter-island ferries are operated by Orkney Ferries.
