Outside House o'Wards

Looking west

This is the view from the door of the cottage looking west along the bay toward the pier, where the island ferry ties up overnight (for foot passengers only- the RORO ferry terminal for cars is at Lyness, approx. 7.5 miles away) and the general merchants is situated (groceries, fruit and veg, post office, fuel). The lifeboat is anchored there too (go to www.longhopelifeboat.org.uk to read about some of the fascinating history of the lifeboat) and John, who is the mechanic of the lifeboat, is always happy to arrange a time to talk about the work of the lifeboat and to show people around the station. The hills that can be seen across the bay are the hills of Hoy, the highest in Orkney and well worth the effort to walk amongst for the stunning views from their summits. The breathtaking sea stack of the famous "Old Man of Hoy" is one such unforgettable site. We have extensive local knowledge of the island and information and maps in the cottage to help you plan your holiday.

The garden

The large garden at the back of the house is sheltered and south facing. If you're lucky with the weather, it becomes a real suntrap. There's a large graveled patio area along the length of the house with outdoor furniture to eat al fresco or just to sit and read or just to sit and do nothing at all! The peace and quiet of the island, the fresh air and the ever- present changing seascape combine to create the perfect ambience for some quality thinking time! The large lawn is ideal for outdoor games and relaxing.
